Do Video Games Cause Behavior Problems?

How much time have you spent on gaming this month? A lot of people in today’s society have problems managing their time by the computer, causing many problems. I believe gaming is bad because it causes anger, it prevents people from developing themselves socially, and they are often addictive.
The first reason why I think games are bad and cause behavior problems is that they can make your angry self apparent. Games that spare you those frustrating moments are rare, especially nowadays when online gaming when you are playing versus other people has become so popular. To see your character die over and over again could make anyone mad. Weather it is first person shooters, MMORPG’s or MOBA-styled games it is always as frustrating. This often results in rather vulgar verbal arguments or in something known as “rage-quitting”. Now, it may not seem like a problem just exiting the game, but shutting down the game does not necessarily remove the feelings it generated. The anger is likely to spread to the gamer’s surroundings, something that could have serious consequences, with grave relationship issues among other problems.
The second problem I see with gaming is that it becomes a way too big part of people’s lives. Many gamers spend countless hours in the game world, not realizing it until their time is already gone. I once met a person who had spent over 9000 (!) hours in the game, that is more than one whole year! At early stages the time consumption may not seem like a major issue, but everything adds up. In the end many people feel like they just threw a part of their life away. People who are stuck in a game also tend to have problems prioritizing the things in their life, making them lose friends, interests in hobbies they had prior to their game addiction and many other things.
The final reason why I think gaming affects people’s behavior negatively is because it prevents them from developing themselves socially. Often the individuals who get neglected by the society quest for a feeling of belonging somewhere other than real life; on the Internet and in different online games. Except for the vital risk that an addiction may form, the other problem with this is that the person in question may lose the feeling of needing to socialize with people in their surroundings in real life. With no serious consequences at young age apart from possible lack of friends and minor psychological problems, the negative aspects grow bigger as you proceed into the adult life. A majority of the employers today look for outgoing, socially talented people, so people who spend too much time in front of the computer will have a hard time finding jobs.
Some may claim that gaming is good for you because you get better at creative thinking. While many studies have shown that this is true indeed, there are vastly superior ways of improving your creative thinking that do not include sitting glued to a computer several hours a day. You don’t have to make you body nor your social life suffer; there are countless better ways of improving it. Drawing, doing puzzles (and coming up with you own ones!), just to name a few. Physical activity also helps to stimulate the brain, so get up and move your body to compensate for those hours by the computer!
I believe gaming is bad for today’s society because it causes anger, it prevents people from developing themselves socially, and the games are often addictive. Frequent gamers often have issues managing their time, relationships and also their anger, making it a bigger decision buying a game than it first may seem like. Next time you find yourself at the game store shopping for yourself (or maybe for your children?), ask yourself if it is really worth the risk you are taking by buying it.

TV – The social life killer
You are reaching for the remote control, but just before you reach it you see an interesting name in the timetable. You lean back into the couch and start to watch the next show. How many times has this happened to you? I believe that television does have a negative influence on society because it is making us lazy, it controls our life, and it’s contradicting.
The first reason why I think that television does have a negative influence on society is because it’s making us lazy. TV is very interesting, you can watch comedies, dramas or documentaries; whatever you want to watch. Since there is so much going on, on the TV, a lot of people would rather sit at home and watch TV instead of going out and actually do something. Just a few days ago my cousin joked with her mother saying “mum, just use Google and you will find everything you need to know, our generation is lazy, we have no need for the activity called “move your body”, it’s clearly overrated.” When I heard those words I smiled and thought that it was kind of true. When you want to find something out you just use the Internet or watch a documentary on the TV. When nothing interesting is happening in your life, you watch a drama show or an action movie instead of exploring life, and when you’re sad, you watch a comedy to make you smile instead of relying on your friends and family. You get lazy, both in body and soul.
The second reason why I think that television has a negative influence on society is because it controls our life. Every show is broadcast at a certain time every day or once a week. Suppose that you like several programs. One program you watch is between four and five every day, this means you can’t meet your friends after school. Two shows are broadcast every Friday night between seven and nine. Immediately you are booked up every Friday, so if you ever want a late morning or if you’re feeling lonely, you will have to miss your precious show.
The third reason why I think that television is having a negative influence on today’s society is because it’s contradicting. If you take commercials for an example, first it says “you’re beautiful, so be yourself with our new product”, but then it tells you that “with our new product, you can get rid of that extra weight”. Isn’t that the same thing as telling you that you don’t look good? That means that they’re contradicting; they go against their own words, by first saying something and then counter it with the exact opposite. Just by saying “this will make you more beautiful”, thousands and sometimes even millions of people are tricked into buying their product.
Now you’re probably thinking something like “not everyone let themselves be tricked or even controlled by their TV. Even if you´re not there’s still to many people who are indeed controlled by their TV.
I believe that television does have a negative influence on society because it’s making us lazy, it controls our life, and it’s contradicting. Don’t let the TV control you! Remember that not everything on the TV is real, so go out there and make it real. Live your life!

THE THING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.

    Linda

Grade 6 students were asked to write a short piece of writing in 15 minutes about something that changed their life.

THE THING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.

When I was in my mother’s stomach, everything was black and I could not move or speak. It was boring and I started to feel lonely.
But one day I was so angry and I started kicking the stuff around me. Suddenly, I saw light and I started to cry! I was so glad! I felt how somebody pulled me out, and there I was. Out in the world! I wondered what exciting things were going to happen next!
